Mazel Trick runners hitting stride
By Michael Sherack
10-31-2003
Lasik, shown earlier this year at Monmouth Park, is one of several winners this year for freshman sire Mazel Trick.
Mazel Trick, a son of Phone Trick - Mazatleca, by Ramahorn whose first foals are 2-year-olds of 2003, was represented by three winners in recent days. Mazel Trick is the sire of International Equine Acquisitions' Aron's Matzoballs, He's No Angel, and Unsocial Behavior.
On Oct. 26 at Woodbine, Ontheqt (Mazel Trick - Confidential, by Smarten) won the Fanfreluche Stakes and ran her record to 4-2-2-0. She's now earned $156,940. She earned an 85 Beyer Speed Figure for her latest three-length win and completed six furlongs in 1:11.34.
Luckbealadytonight (Mazel Trick - City Mouse, by Rahy) and Psych (Mazel Trick - Tobie Ruckus, by Bold Ruckus) both won maiden races on Oct. 29. Luckbealadytonight, a $125,000 juvenile purchase, won her second start in a Santa Anita maiden race worth $30,000. She showed speed between foes and battled gamely in the stretch to win by a head, completing six furlongs in 1:10.90 and earning a 69 Beyer Speed Figure.
Psych, a $100,000 yearling at auction, won her debut by four lengths in a Churchill Downs maiden special weight race at five furlongs. She completed the distance in 59.41 seconds and earned a 73 Beyer Speed Figure, while "leading throughout and going away under hand urging in the stretch," according to the Daily Racing Form's chart.
Mazel Trick's other winners are Juventus (Mazel Trick - Give a Toast, by Storm Bird), who won his debut at Aqueduct in May and finished third in the Grade 3 Flash behind Chapel Royal (third in BC Juvenile) in his only other start; and Lasik (Mazel Trick - Clear Vision, by Chromite), who won her second start by 10 1/2 lengths versus maiden special weight company at Belmont in June.
IEA anxiously awaits the debuts of its exciting group of juveniles sired by Mazel Trick. Aron's Matzoballs (Mazel Trick - Phoenician Miss, by Classic Go Go) cost $60,000 at auction and is nearing his Aqueduct debut under the guidance of trainer Gregory Martin. He's No Angel (Mazel Trick - Teen Angel, by Saratoga Six) brought $135,000 and is also currently under Martin's care at Belmont Park.
Fresh off the farm and physically looking strong, He's No Angel will debut in the coming months. Unsocial Behavior (Mazel Trick - Partial Doon, by Matsadoon) is a grand looking filly who cost $150,00 earlier this year. She is currently on a farm in upstate New York, where she is being given time to develop.
In 2003, Mazel Trick stood for a $12,500 stud fee, live foal, at Airdrie Stud in Midway, Kentucky. (Phone 859-873-7270).
NOTE: This website will continue to spotlight sires of IEA-owned stock, and shortly an overview of all said sires and their progeny will be posted.
