Radiohead is entered to make his next start in a $57,000 allowance race today at Gulfstream Park. Approximate post time is 2:12 p.m. for the day's third race.
Amen Hallelujah, owned by IEAH Stables and others, is entered to make her next start in the Grade 2, $150,000 Davona Dale Stakes at Gulfstream Park on Saturday, February 27. Approximate post time is 4:43 p.m. for the day's eighth race.
The following Daily Racing Form coverage previews both scheduled starts.
Radiohead is listed at 3-1 on the morning line, with General Maximus favored at 2-1. The consensus selections, in order, of DRF handicappers are General Maximus, Radiohead, and Quick Ride.
Mike Welsch, DRF's lead analyst at Gulfstream, selects Radiohead, Homeboykris, and General Maximus. He writes, "RADIOHEAD scratched from the Hutcheson when drawing the rail last weekend. English bred lost more ground than he was beaten by in the BC Juvenile. Training extremely well for his main track bow. HOMEBOYKRIS, the preferred one's uncoupled mate, was hard used dueling through a fast pace from deep rail in the Holy Bull. Figures to benefit from the outing. Should trip out well stalkinig likely pace of GENERAL MAXIMUS who is perfect in two starts but must prove he can carry his speed a mile against much tougher."
Art Gropper took "A Closer Look" at Radiohead: "Broke sharply in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile but was about to be 4-5 wide into the 1st turn instead the rider checked out of it and he was shuffled all the way back; super-fresh barn also does well with newly-acquired runners; he defeated 2 next-out winners in last; the 9th-place finisher Beyered 92 winning a GP n1x alw. next-time out while the 12th-place finisher took the G2 Hutcheson next time out (99 Beyer); the runnerup from last took the G1 Cash Call next out with an 83 Beyer; working like he's ready to fire a big one in his conventional-dirt debut; appears the one to beat."
Amen Hallelujah is listed at 3-1 on the morning line, with Bickersons the choice at 5-2. Consensus choices: Bickerson (Best bet of day), Amen Hallelujah, and Christine Daae.
Welsch selects Bickersons, Amen Hallelujah, and Joanie's Catch. He writes, "BICKERSONS turned in a career best effort in the Forward Gal and while not likely to improve on the performance still the one to catch if able to just reproduce that kind of effort on stretch to a mile. Must avoid potentially suicidal duel with Christine Daae if that one goes although she has also been entered under allowance conditions here Sunday.
AMEN HALLELUJAH training extremely well for her first try over conventional dirt but must work out a trip breaking from the rail. JOANIE'S CATCH never runs a poor one. Hard to leave out of the number somewhere considering her consistency."
Brian Pochman took "A Closer Look" at Amen Hallelujah: "This filly enters this race fresh off of her first graded stakes victory and she seems to keep getting a little bit better with each passing start; she's making her first start over dirt today, but judging from her recent workouts it looks like she's been handling this surface just fine; she owns excellent positional speed and must be regarded as a top contender in here."
Davona Dale attracts solid talentBy Mike Welsch, DRF
HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. - The Grade 2 Davona Dale traditionally serves as a prep for the richer Bonnie Miss later in the meet. But this year the one-mile Davona Dale will not take a back seat to its more prestigious counterpart, having lured a stellar field topped by the speedy Bickersons and Grade 2 winners Amen Hallelujah and Sassy Image.
The Davona Dale tops a 10-race Saturday program that also includes a pair of Grade 3 stakes for older fillies and mares, the one-mile Sabin on the main track and the 1 3/8-mile The Very One on the grass. The Sabin will feature the local return of the reigning Davona Dale and Bonnie Miss champion, Justwhistledixie.
Bickersons dominated a strong field in the seven-furlong Forward Gal here last month, including Eclipse Award winner She Be Wild.
Amen Hallelujah took the worst of it at the post position draw, getting the rail for her local debut. Amen Hallelujah is coming off a three-quarter-length victory on Pro-Ride over Franny Freud in Santa Anita's Grade 2 Santa Ynez in her 3-year-old debut. The Davona Dale will be her first start on dirt.
Sassy Image, a multiple graded stakes winner, has won her last three starts, including the Sweetest Chant here earlier in the meet.
Joanie's Catch has finished second in five of her six starts since winning the Brave Raj last fall at Calder.
Completing the lineup are the lightly raced Christine Daae, undefeated Comic Marvel, Grade 3-placed Mambo Fever, and Female Drama.
Justwhistledixie drew the rail for the Sabin. She will be coming out of the one-mile chute for her first local appearance since her 1o3/4-length victory over Casanova Move in the 2009 Bonnie Miss. Justwhisledixie was transferred to trainer Bill Mott from Kiaran McLaughlin following her second-place finish in the Grade 1 Acorn in June.
Saturday's program also includes several interesting 3-year-old races, including a second-level allowance test going 1 1/8 miles that lured the Rick Dutrow-trained pair of Grade 1 winner Homeboykris and Radiohead, the Nick Zito duo of the undefeated Thomas Got Even and stakes-placed Quick Ride, along with the undefeated General Maximus.
Homeboykris, who finished fifth after contesting a fast pace in the Grade 3 Holy Bull, blew out a half-mile in 49.60 seconds on Wednesday.
