Stables Advisory Board
Daniel Barraclough
Daniel Barraclough studied animal science at Cornell University and received his master's degree there in 2000. He served as the Cornell Equestrian team's assistant coach 1997-99, following a dozen or so years in which he rode show horses and competed in the northeast.
In 2003, Barraclough opened Saratoga Glen Farm, his first commercial breeding and boarding venture, in upstate New York. He had begun breeding Thoroughbreds seven years earlier with a focus on preferred sale-quality New York-breds.
The farm typically boards between 25 and 50 horses, and the current business incorporates the boarding and raising of mares and foals, sales consignments, and standing stallions. His clientele includes trainers such as Nick Zito, Richard Violette, and Carlos Martin, and prominent owners Sarah and Ken Ramsey, Rick Pitino, and Peter Fuller.
Richard Dutrow Jr.
Richard Dutrow Jr. is rapidly becoming one of the most recognized names in the Thoroughbred training profession. Mr. Dutrow has led trainers in wins on the NYRA circuit in 2001 and 2002. In 2003, his purse earnings were nearly $5 million, which placed him in the top 20 trainers in North America. He won 132 races in 2003, and has continued to win at a strong clip in 2004.
Mr. Dutrow won the trainer's title at the Aqueduct inner track meet (Dec. 3, 2003, through March 7, 2004, inclusive) when he won with 47 of 124 starters (38%). The next trainer on the leader board had 23 wins. Mr. Dutrow runners earned more than $1.5 million in purses at that meet.
Mr. Dutrow trains more than 100 horses, and races his stock most frequently in Florida and New York. He posted two of the biggest wins of his career in 2004 when Offlee Wild won the Grade 2, $500,000 Massachusetts Handicap at Suffolk Downs, and Love of Money won the Grade 2, $750,000 Pennsylvania Derby at Philadelphia Park.
Dominick Schettino
Dominick Schettino, 38, got his start in Thoroughbred racing in the mid-1980s, and worked as an assistant trainer to Dominick Imperio before training on his own in late 1992. His typical year since is one of 10-20 wins with limited starters and a connect rate of 10-15 percent, but he enjoyed a career year in 2004 winning with 29 of his 148 runners (19%, 41% in-the-money).
In 2004, Schettino's wins, win percentage, in-the-money percentage, and purse earnings (nearly $1 million) all represented career highs. Bettors were rewarded with a positive return on investment if backing all Schettino runners - something that can be said for several prior years, also.
Schettino in 2004 developed Galloping Grocer, a blowout winner of his first three career starts, second-place finisher in the Grade 2 Remsen, and a promising candidate for the 2005 Kentucky Derby as a 3-year-old.
Other career highlights for Schettino include winning a pair of graded stakes races with Serious Spender and competing in races such as the Champagne (Slick Twist) and Travers (Rank and File).
He generally maintains a string of between 20 and 30 runners, and is based at Belmont Park in barn #59. His association with IEAH Stables began in January 2005.
Schettino is a Bronx, New York, native.
John Terranova II
John Terranova II, 34, began to gain an interest in racing at a young age through his father, John, who owned Thoroughbreds. Terranova II often went to the barns, enjoyed going to Saratoga every summer, and after studying business for 2 ½ years at Boston College, he took a break to work at the racetrack and never went back to school.
He worked as an assistant to trainer Dominick Imperio before taking out his trainer's license in 1992.
Now based at Belmont Park (barn #7), Terranova II also typically maintains a winter division in Florida to race at Gulfstream Park and usually oversees 20-30 horses. When in Florida, his New York operation is tended to by his wife and assistant trainer, Tonja Terranova. Tonja, who previously worked as an assistant for trainers Bob Baffert and Brian Mayberry, often cares for Baffert's shippers. In the fall of 1999, she saddled the Baffert-trained River Keen to victories in the Grade 1 Jockey Club Gold and Woodward handicaps.
John has trained horses for prominent owners such as Gatsas Thoroughbreds LLC and Team Valor Stables LLC. His career highlights include training Gander, a career earner of more than $1.8 million in purses and a multiple New York-bred champion; Shadow Caster, winner of the Grade 2 Forego Handicap at Saratoga in 2000; and Star of Valor, winner of the Grade 3 Aqueduct Handicap in 1998.
Gander, retired in the summer of 2004 at age 8, raced steadily under Terranova II's supervision for four years and along the way won eight of 35 starts including the Grade 2 Meadowlands Cup, $250,000 Empire Classic Handicap, and Evan Shipman and Kings Point handicaps.
Terranova II has achieved his career-best statistics since 2000, generally winning with about 15-percent of his runners and finishing in the money with between 38 and 45 percent of his runners. In terms of purse earnings, his best years came in 2001 and 2002 when his horses earned between $1.2 and 1.4 million in purses in each year.
Terranova II was born in Syosset, New York, and his association with IEAH Stables began in January 2005.
